Successful Launch of high Resolution Radar Satellite COSMO-SkyMed-2

On December 9, 2007 at 3.30 Italian time, a Boeing Delta II rocket launched the second satellite of the earth observation constellation, COSMO-SkyMed, from Vandenberg US air force base. Since its launch into orbit in June 2007, the COSMO-SkyMed 1 satellite has successfully completed all the test phases, and to date, has already captured 4,000 images.

The Italian COSMO-SkyMed system, the first dual-use global earth observation constellation, comprises four radar satellites for dual use (civil/government, military and commercial) and is designed to monitor and survey the entire globe for civil protection (environmental risk management), strategic (defence and national security), and scientific and commercial purposes. It will be particularly useful for applications in environmental risk management, emergencies, defence and national security and will thus be able to provide assessments of situations on a global scale.

As exclusive mater reseller of IKONOS and IRS-P5 high resolution satellite data product in china, Beijing Earth Observation Inc. (BEO) has constructed cooperative parthership with Italian e-GEOS corporation and was solely responsible for operation and popularization of COSMO-SkyMed high resolution radar data in China. With COSMO radar satellite, BEO will have more abundant satellite data sources and provide deeper solution services for extensive customers based on high resolution optical satellites IKONOS, IRS-P5 and radar satellite COSMO SkyMed.
